Environment —
each student works on an individual basis at their home or other agreed upon
location. They work at their pace. We do not do group tutoring or learning
unless it comes as a special request. Time spent with the tutor is one on one;
hence, questions are asked and answered directly by the tutor. Explanations/responses
are given in a timely, effective manner.
Tutors —
our tutors consist of Ontario Certified teachers, graduate students or individuals
with a strong university emphasis in the required topics. All have been assessed to
ensure they have the aptitude as well as personality required for teaching. We also
do a background police check on all our tutors. As an example we would hire someone
like a certified engineer who works with us part-time as they enjoy helping students.
Resources —
we use industry standard time tested and true resources which are presented to the
students via our tutors. These resources are usually supplied by the student but can
be supplemented by the tutor with resources of their own.
Homework —
enables practice and fosters independence. Since any homework assigned by Apple Plus
is always checked by the tutors, when homework is completed successfully, we can be confident
the student has mastered the skill. If errors are found, it acts as a trigger to review the
missing concepts.
Monitoring Progress —
feedback is ongoing from tutors and progress reports are given after each session. This enables
students to better understand requirements and ways to improve not only the skill at hand but
also the general process of learning itself. Parents and students are given access to these
reports via our
′Parent Connections′ web portal.
Building confidence & independence —
inherent in our approach is to build confidence and independence in our students, they
have the opportunity to correct their own work and hence become more aware of their
errors. This fosters independence and makes the student less reliant on the tutor. We ask
students to come prepared for the lessons by reviewing specific material beforehand. When a
tutor ascertains that a student has not prepared properly for a session they may ask them
to do some review during the session. This encourages general learning skills and once
again helps build independence so the student is better prepared for their academic future.
